We left Virginia last Thursday to make a family trip to Arizona to celebrate my grandmother's 100th birthday. As we were flying to Phoenix, the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak was worsening. It was great to see family and celebrate GG becoming a centenarian, though now we were far from home during the pandemic. We originally had flights booked on Tuesday, but didn’t love the idea of getting on a plane and being in crowded airports. With the kids out of school for a month and our ability to work remotely, we figured there might be other options to implement social distancing.
It turns out that Cruise America needed to relocate an RV from Arizona to Manassas, VA. They basically gave us a free rental. So we are going to spend the next nine days driving across the US in a 25' recreational vehicle. We will make our plans to keep social distance, so will miss out on a number of the things you'd normally do on a drive like this. That said, there is amazing nature that we can't wait to see, and probably some roadside kitch too. We are excited to make a family adventure out of getting home during the unfortunate situation the world is encountering.
We went to Walmart early yesterday to stock up for the trip. Beyond all of the supplies we'll need from food to sheets and pillows, we also needed some cold weather gear (only packed for 75 degree AZ!). Finding pants and jackets in Arizona isn't the easiest, so we also made a stop at Goodwill. We found all kinds of things - most importantly fleece coats. With the toilet paper shortage, we had to be creative on how we'd get TP for the RV, and thankfully were able to get a few rolls here and there. We also let the kids pick out some new games and we grabbed lots of wine and water for the drive.
We already have a RV trip planned in August to South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming but this is our first ever RV trip. Now we are about to drive 2400 miles across the country! With everything going on, we are glad to have our own “hotel” room and supplies.
