Day 7: Cape Girardeau, MO to Bardstown, KY

Another slow start for the Etue road trip crew.  We do most of the planning for the next day in the evenings, but we’ve been lounging around in the mornings, taking advantage of showers, and generally not moving fast.  After a week on the road, we know that means more of a rush in the evenings.  It’s working for us, more or less.

We hit the road around 10 and our first stop was the murals of Cape Girardeau painted on the flood wall of the Mississippi River.  These paintings depict major events in the town’s history and famous people of Missouri.  In true midwest fashion, a local saw us taking pictures and talked to us from his car about the site - and he stayed 6 feet away!

From there we drove across the river into Illinois and then quickly crossed state lines in Kentucky.  We chose to drive Kentucky because the weather looked warmer than other options.  When mapping out the route, I found the Land between the Lakes National Recreation Area.  It has a drive-thru Elk & Bison Prairie.  For $5 per car, you can drive through the habitat.  The kids just loved scouting for animals.  Even though the elk stayed far away, the bison were roadside. It was a fun experience and a social distancing win as well.

We stopped at a boat ramp/walk on the way off the island for a quick hike by the lake.  We enjoyed the peaceful scenery before the rest of our drive in Kentucky.

I chose the My Old Kentucky Home State Park for our camping adventure tonight.  It is close to many awesome (and closed) bourbon distilleries.  This place, while rustic, has fire rings (better for dinner) and some nice wooded atmosphere.  The kids enjoyed exploring the woods a bit while we did the cooking.   It’s a rainy night here, so we were driven indoors pretty early for board games.  The sound of the rain on the RV is comforting (much more so than when in a tent!)

We are nearing the end of our road trip.  Tomorrow we’ll head to West Virginia with a goal of our last night somewhere in Virginia. We crossed the Mississippi and the Eastern time zone today, so we certainly feel closer to home. We’ve been away for 11 days now, and while I know we are going to feel those walls closing in on us quickly once we return, we are ready to get back.
