Day 8: Bardstown, KY to Gassaway, WV

Thanks to everyone who has been following along on our adventure. We have really loved the notes! We realize that our journey seems magical to everyone stuck at home. It is definitely magical for us too, but also has the reality of four people in a 200 square feet RV.

We started our journey today taking in some Roadside America fun in horse country. We saw a life size statue of Secretariat and plenty of ridiculous horse farms. We even stopped for our RV lunch in the parking lot of the Kentucky Horse Park (the one random jogger was very confused and still took the long way around).

From there, the day wasn’t great. We had a rain cloud that followed us for most of the afternoon, which prevented us from doing anything outside. The kids got impatient. I have to try and work in a tiny space with three other people on winding roads. Honestly, we just had a rough day.

We passed through Charleston, WV and took a quick driving tour of the state capitol. It was quite large and impressive! This was right after we found out that Virginia wasn’t going to be reopening schools this year, and we did our best to make that part drive educational. And at that point I bailed on work today and sat with the kids. I started making my own pipe cleaner house and suddenly they were all about crafts. That helped keep the peace.

We ended up going further than originally planned, and are now only 275 miles from home. Early on we were worried about making it home in time so pushed on. Now we are pushing on as the rain and a cold front has removed some of our options.

Tonight we stopped at a tiny RV park in Gassaway, WV. We called and the owner offered to meet us at the highway and guide us in. We assured him we had GPS :) This place is more of a long term living community, but has been very welcoming. For dinner, we cobbled together chili mac from the random items we bought at the Arizona Wal-Mart and it worked out. The site is right on the Elk River. It is beautiful, but it is muddy from rain and still cold, so we spent the night in the RV.

The RV Park is so new that the bath house is still under construction. Will we shower in the RV or go another day? Is this day the straw that sends us home a day early? Stay tuned!
