It was a cold, but fine night in Lebanon, MO. The temperature overnight got down to 29 degrees, and we woke up to a cold and frosty morning.
The heater in the RV kept us warm overnight. Thankfully it wasn’t windy, and the kids were excited to get outside. There was a playground across the lot and only one other RV in the entire park, so we let the kids play on it. The RV resort also advertised a disc golf course, and the kids wanted to play. It turns out the course wasn’t set up, but I was able to get one of the holes from where they were storing it and move it around so we could play five holes before we headed out. Yes, we played despite the 32 degree weather! We got back in the RV and had hot chocolate before unplugging and heading on our way.
With all of the outside fun, we didn’t get out of there until 11:15 AM. We stopped to fill up our propane, as we were surprised that the gauge was still showing ⅔ full - we thought the gauge might actually be broken! We haven’t done much cooking on the stove top, but we have run the heater at night. Turns out, we have a pretty large propane tank and it was still over half full. It is comforting knowing it is topped off and we are good. We shouldn’t have to fill it again until we get ready to return it. After the fill, it was afternoon before we got on the road.
Our original plan for today was to drive through the Mark Twain National Forest and then head to St Louis. We decided this morning instead to head south because we had a better chance of dodging the cold weather. If it’s cold and/or rainy outside, we are stuck in a 200 sq ft RV, so finding ways to take advantage of the outside is a big deal.
We were excited to see the Mark Twain National Forest. It looks amazing on the map covering so much of the state. We had trouble finding good guides to the forest online, but did find some recommendations on the routes to drive. Unfortunately, it didn’t meet our expectations. Much of the forest was just rural county roads, and the trees haven’t started budding so there were very little signs of spring. Additionally, the forest is not well marked or mapped, making it hard to find good places to go. We saw a sign for a boat ramp and took the drive down. Luckily, it had a nice grassy area and view of the lake. We got to play some family soccer on the stop.
This was a rougher day. It’s hard for the kids to entertain themselves on a winding mountain road. Even with Dramamine, we can’t let them do iPads and stuff flies everywhere around the bends. We somehow convinced them to try and nap and Jason got about 45 minutes of sleep. (he’s always been great at naps, Ryan just bounces around). That definitely helped us get through the drive.
We made it to the Southeast corner of Missouri, and will head into Kentucky tomorrow. Just a few days left.
