Day 2: Holbrook, AZ to Bernalillo, NM

Today, I learned to spell Albuquerque. But let's begin at where we left off on Day 1.

We got everyone to sleep last night at a reasonable hour. About 3 AM we woke up from the cold. It was warm when we went to bed, so we didn’t turn on the heater. That didn’t last with the cold temperature outside, but David figured out how to use the furnace and we were able to settle back in. RV life has it’s quirks.

Today, we planned for a long drive, with hopes of making it past Albuquerque. Holbrook is right next to the Petrified Forest National Park, so we planned to cut through there on our way out of town. At the entrance we found out that the road was closed in the center, so we did the south side of the park and doubled back. With the additional detour we didn’t get as far as hoped - let’s not make this a trend.

But back to the good stuff. We really enjoyed our time at the petrified forest. These logs were buried by a river millions of years ago and essentially turned into rock. They have a huge walking trail where you can learn about how they are made and see different formations. There were only a few people there and everyone made wide turns. Social distancing at it’s finest. We even did our semi-annual picture “Kids on a Log”!

The rest of our day was spent on the road, crossing into New Mexico. We stopped at a local grocery store for lunch and found the first pack of napkins we’ve seen in a week. Christine was able to do a conference call and got some work done as well. The kids mostly watched movies.

The scenery on this leg was really interesting as well. We actually drove through a dormant volcano in Grants, NM and saw a geyser from the road. Lots of interesting rock formations and terrain. David enjoyed drafting semi trucks to try and get our speed above 65mph.

We stopped short of Albuquerque at a great RV resort. The family got some time outside with a soccer ball and washer toss. We grilled up some sausage and heated up some sauerkraut for dinner.  We even remembered earlier in the week to pick up some Guinness for St Patricks Day!
