We talked at dinner thinking back about the trip and some of our favorite stops. There was a lot of consensus around the table.
For campgrounds, despite the very rustic bathrooms, the winner was the Lake McClellan Campground in Alanreed, Texas. While it was the least expensive and most rustic campground, it had a huge field right on a beautiful lake. The scenery was amazing, and there were only four RVs in the total of sixty available spaces.
Interestingly, the campground is now closed due to coronavirus concerns, and this was one of the places we felt the most socially distant on the entire trip! The runner RV park up was the opposite side of the spectrum: The Route 66 RV Resort outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is one the top rated RV parks in the US. While it didn’t have the beauty of the lake, the RV park was well manicured and had great service and features. The kids enjoyed putting on the putting practice green, and we made a great dinner on the gas grill they provided.
For sightseeing stops, Christine and I both picked the Petrified Forest National Park. In all of our travels, we’d never seen anything like it. It had great walking trails and beautiful landscapes.
While the kids enjoyed that, they both put the Elk & Bison Prairie at Land Between the Lakes, Kentucky as their top choice (and was the second choice for the adults.)
We certainly enjoyed the scenery out west for our favorite driving legs. As east coast residents, it was interesting to see the desert and cactus landscape evolve over the course of a few hours.
We really enjoyed the trip from Mesa, AZ to Holbrook, NM and the next day’s journey from Holbrook to Albuquerque. (The kids did not have a vote in this category, because they had zero interest in passing scenery.) You can see our entire journey on the map if you want to revisit it with us!
